How do I protect documents in monsoon humidity?

Keep documents dry, away from leaks and damp floors, and in suitable archival folders. For enclosed storage, monitor humidity and select a contained desiccant for the actual box. Do not seal damp originals or assume one sachet protects an entire cupboard.

Start with the storage location, not the absorber. Check for a leaking wall, condensation or wet shelving. Move originals to a stable, dry interior location; packaging does not repair a source of dampness. Sort papers before choosing a box so the internal dimensions accommodate them without folding.

The National Archives recommends cool, stable conditions, relative humidity below 65% to discourage mould and suitable archival enclosures. Acid-free folders and stable enclosure materials help separate and support papers. This is general preservation guidance, not proof that a particular Toreso storage box is archival-safe.

For a closed document box, record an initial humidity reading. Ask the desiccant supplier to size the medium for the enclosure, barrier and expected exposure. Keep the absorber physically separated from papers. A liquid-collecting hanging absorber is not interchangeable with a contained silica-gel sachet next to originals.

Write down the inspection date, humidity reading and condition of the closure. Recheck after opening the box, a weather change or evidence of dampness; replacement timing must follow the actual product instructions. Do not invent a universal monthly replacement schedule or heat a casing with no regeneration instructions.

If originals are already damp, stuck together or mould-affected, do not put them in a sealed box and treat the absorber as a remedy. Seek a conservator's advice for valuable records. Keep readable copies where appropriate, but do not confuse a digital backup with preservation of the original.

How much silica gel should I put in a document box?

There is no verified universal amount. Give the supplier the usable enclosure volume, closure and barrier, starting conditions and expected storage time. Monitor humidity rather than treating sachet count as a guarantee.

Can I microwave silica gel packets?

Not without instructions for the exact media, indicator and packet or casing. A material being reusable does not establish that its enclosure is microwave-safe.

Will a sealed box prevent mould on damp papers?

No. Do not seal damp documents. Address the source of humidity and use conservation guidance for damaged originals; an absorber does not establish a mould-free guarantee.
